World Wildlife Day!

3rd Mar 2023

Yr 6 pupils are working with Fermanagh artist, Morag Donaldson to create a shared display to help raise awareness of our declining butterfly and bee population and how we can help protect these important pollinators. 🐝🦋🐛🕷️

Today is #WorldWildlifeDay and here is how butterflies help us:
-Along with bees and other insects, they pollinate our gardens
- They are indicative of a healthy environment, attracting native birds and bees
- They make us happy! Butterflies have a special ‘magic’ and watching them flutter around the garden or stopping to sip nectar on a flower, lifts your heart.

Here are a few tips to help our butterflies:
- Grow wildflowers and allow some areas of your garden to be left unmown. Butterflies evolved with our native flowers, sometimes dismissed as weeds, which provide nectar food for the butterflies, eg: buttercups, dandelions, clover and lovely wildflowers like scabious and knapweed.
- Plant some herbs. It’s a win-win for your family and the butterflies and other pollinators. Butterflies love yummy herbs, especially fennel, chives and marjoram.
-Bin the chemicals! Anything you spray in the garden will likely harm a range of insects, and wildlife, including butterflies.
