Reception Class / Feis 2024

19th Apr 2024

Well done to all the children in Reception that participated in the Feis - poem, song and art.
Standing up on stage is daunting so we are so proud of the boys and girls that did this!

There is nothing to show at the end of play. When the play ends, the play fades, never to be exactly replicated. There is no end product. SO our work (i.e. play) in Reception is sometimes hard to prove! There is often a gap between having a rich first-hand experience and keeping hold of the experience in a symbolic representation. With all our time on Happy Hill I knew the theme of 'trees' was going to suit our children. By visiting the same place all year round, the children have seen how the trees on Happy Hill have changed through the seasons. Creativity is about children representing their own ideas in their own way. Supported by our nurturing environment the children were able to find what they needed for their own interpretation of what a 'tree' could look like. Children are supported with a variety of resources – sticky tape dispensers, scissors, paper, pens, hole punchers, string, paint, rollers etc, available in our outdoor classroom. Having the outdoor classroom means the children can become autonomous (being as independent as they can, knowing how to get help when it is needed and with staff who observe and support when help is indicated). The outdoor classroom area is freer than an indoor classroom - we don't have to panic if paint sometimes splashes on the floor. Each piece of work was child-led and the children shared their ideas with each other . The children benefited from trying out different media and resources to represent their thoughts, feelings and ideas symbolically. Symbolic representation uses many different kinds of media - tissue paper, bottle tops, cardboard tubes....

The children received lots of certificates and medals for all sections, and we even had an event winner for the art - Well done Eabha. The real prize is that these pieces of work illustrate how uniquely creative each child is! We are so proud of our wonderful children!
