A Race for Right Angles
Today, the Year 3 children celebrated World Maths Day at Forest School 🌿➕. We began by using our “angle eaters” to identify right angles in the environment. The children discovered a wide range of natural and man-made examples, including paving stones, benches, and the square edges around screw bolts. It was wonderful to see how many examples of right angles they could spot in the world around them 👀📐.
Next, the children were divided into three groups and given the challenge of creating a shape or picture using sticks. The aim was to include as many right angles as possible—the group with the most right angles would win! 🏆 To check whether an angle was a right angle, the children used a multilink cube placed in the corner. We discussed how to create and check right angles, particularly when working with sticks, which can often be uneven or slightly curved.
As the activity progressed, the children began to think creatively and strategically 💡. One group discovered that by creating smaller squares or rectangles within a larger shape, they could quickly increase the number of right angles. It was fantastic to see their problem-solving skills in action.
One group successfully created a shape containing an impressive total of 73 right angles! 🤯 This was a wonderful demonstration of teamwork, mathematical understanding, and creativity 🤝✨.
Well done, Year 3—you are mathematicians! 🎉
