Forest School Sessions

11th Apr 2022

This term we have been so lucky to be part of the Forest School initiative. The children have had two sessions with Brian.

During our first session Brian talked to the children about the word, 'camouflage.' The children used the colour cards to find things that matched! The children were excellent at searching all over Happy Hill!

The children were divided into two groups. Group 1 were the worms and had to hide their worms (pieces of string) in various places. Group 2 were the birds that had to find the worms! Then the children swapped over! The children were wonderful at working together and taking turns! They didn’t peek once!

The children looked closely at a tree. Their challenge was to make a tree picture from items that they could find! The picture was framed with bamboo sticks. The children worked in groups of four. The results were truly fantastic! One child said, ‘look we made a forest.’

During the second forest school session the children had a wonderful time as they made dens. Using plastic sheets, bamboo sticks and pegs, the children demonstrated amazing thinking skills and so much fun was had in the process! The children worked in groups and were so engaged and involved. You can even see from some of the photos that some children wanted to decorate their dens with branches and grass! We definitely have future engineers, builders and interior designers among us!

Brian showed us how to use a 'Kelly Kettle' to boil water to make a hot orange juice. The children listened carefully to instructions as Brian lit the fire. The children were excellent at taking turns as they waited to receive their juice. We are going to purchase our own Kelly Kettle to enjoy further fire activities on Happy Hill!

The children were so engaged and busy throughout both sessions! I have learned so much and so have the children!
